The Indian government has banned the Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), a Meghalaya-based insurgent group, for five years due to its involvement in violent activities that threaten India's sovereignty. The group, which aims to secede areas inhabited by Khasi and Jaintia tribes, has been involved in 48 criminal cases, including explosions and extortion. The ban was imposed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
