St. Louis County installs a pioneering 10-acre geothermal system at its landfill to power a new treatment plant.

St. Louis County in Virginia has installed a first-of-its-kind 10-acre geothermal system at its landfill, using heat from decomposing waste to power a future leachate treatment plant. The $3 million project includes a specialized geothermal liner costing $33,000 and is expected to be self-sufficient within a year. The new plant, set to be operational by 2026, could model future waste management innovations.
