Sri Lanka's first openly transgender parliamentary candidate, Chanu Nimesha, is running to promote a more inclusive political culture. Transgender individuals, about 1% of Sri Lanka's population, face social rejection and lack legal protection and political representation. Nimesha, a 49-year-old Socialist Party candidate, hopes her candidacy will inspire greater acceptance and inclusivity.
