Frank Auerbach, a prominent 20th-century painter who fled Nazi Germany as a child and became a key figure in the "School of London," has died at 93. Arriving in England in 1939 as part of the Kindertransport, Auerbach studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Known for his thickly painted, near-abstract portraits and landscapes, Auerbach won the Golden Lion at the 1986 Venice Biennale. His recent work was on display at the Courtauld Gallery.
