NASA funds Electra.aero and others to develop emission-free, electric aircraft by 2050.

NASA has awarded contracts to develop sustainable aviation technologies under its AACES 2050 initiative, aimed at reducing emissions from commercial aircraft. Electra.aero, with partners like American Airlines and MIT, is developing electric and hybrid-electric planes designed to fly without airports, emissions, or noise. The company has over 2,000 aircraft under Letters of Intent from 50+ customers and expects to start operations by the end of the decade. NASA also commissioned five new studies to explore sustainable aircraft concepts, awarding a total of $11.5 million to further investigate technologies for aviation's sustainable future by 2050.
