Metro Vancouver is building a $450 million earthquake-resistant water tunnel under the Fraser River, connecting Surrey and New Westminster. Expected to be completed by 2028, the Annacis Water Supply Tunnel is designed to withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake and ensure water availability for communities south of the Fraser River. The 2.3-kilometer tunnel is part of several major projects aimed at securing the region's water supply, with construction currently 60% complete.
