Dr. Marielena Vélez de Brown becomes Monroe County's first Latina public health commissioner.

Dr. Marielena Vélez de Brown has been officially appointed as the new commissioner of public health for Monroe County, becoming the first Latina and woman to hold the position. She joined the health department in 2016 and has been serving as acting commissioner since March. County Executive Bello praised her leadership and commitment to health equity, including addressing issues like the opioid crisis and social determinants of health.
