A rare 37-carat emerald, owned by the Aga Khan, set a new world record by selling for nearly $9 million at a Christie's auction in Geneva. Originally a Cartier diamond and emerald brooch commissioned in 1960 by Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan for British socialite Nina Dyer, the emerald surpassed a Bulgari jewel given by Richard Burton to Elizabeth Taylor as the most expensive emerald. The stone was auctioned in 1969 to raise funds for animal welfare and has since passed through the hands of notable jewelers like Van Cleef & Arpels and Harry Winston.
