ADB partners with Kazakhstan to explore retiring a coal plant and shifting to renewable energy.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has signed an agreement with Kazakhstan to explore the early retirement of a coal plant as part of its effort to shift towards renewable energy. This initiative, under the ADB's Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) program, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Kazakhstan, where coal accounts for 70% of electricity production. The deal, signed at COP29, includes a feasibility study to determine the best path for transitioning to low-carbon energy technologies.
