South Carolina teachers demand higher salaries and better conditions to combat a severe shortage.

The Palmetto State Teachers Association and state education officials also call for better working conditions, including smaller class sizes and enhanced safety measures, to attract and retain educators. The state faced around 1,600 unfilled teaching positions at the start of the school year.
