A recent study covering 50 years of data shows African elephant populations have declined by more than half, with savanna elephants decreasing by 70% and forest elephants by 90%. The decline is mainly due to poaching and habitat loss. While populations have risen in 42% of surveyed sites in southern Africa due to better management, northern and eastern Africa have seen significant declines, highlighting the need for increased conservation efforts.
