Women walking the Camino de Santiago reported facing "terrifying" sexual harassment in rural Spain, Portugal, and France. Nine interviewed women described encounters with men masturbating, lewd comments, and feeling unsafe. Founder of Camigas, Lorena Gaibor, noted sexual harassment is common on the trail. Despite over 230,000 women walking the route last year, safety concerns have only recently gained attention, leading to a Spanish government safety campaign.
