Crime and violence in Latin America cost nearly 3.5% of economic output, surpassing education budgets, IDB reports.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) reports that crime and violence in Latin America and the Caribbean cost nearly 3.5% of the region's economic output, equivalent to almost 80% of the public budgets for education. The cost of crime is twice that of social assistance and 12 times the research and development budget. The IDB suggests that better policies and measures are needed to reduce these costs and improve investment in education and social welfare.
