Researchers link ancient Uruk cylinder seals to the origins of proto-cuneiform writing.
Researchers from the University of Bologna have linked ancient cylinder seals from Uruk, Iraq, to the development of proto-cuneiform, an early writing system. These engraved stone seals, used around 4400-3400 BC, facilitated trade by tracking agricultural and textile goods. The study reveals that motifs from the seals evolved into proto-cuneiform signs, highlighting a significant transition from symbolic imagery to formal writing in early Mesopotamian societies.
