In the wake of Hurricane Helene's flooding in Western North Carolina, the Walnut Fire Department's swift-water rescue team, alongside white-water rafters and military partners, worked for 15 days to save stranded individuals. They performed notable rescues, including five people from the Iron Horse Station using a 24-foot ladder. The team faced difficult choices and continues to support ongoing recovery efforts, as the storm's death toll exceeded 100 and damages reached $53 billion.
