A leader of the Mexican folk saint cult "La Santa Muerte" was shot dead along with two others at an altar in Leon, Guanajuato state, while preparing for the annual celebration. The attack injured eight, including two children. "La Santa Muerte," not recognized by the Catholic Church, attracts followers often seen as marginalized. Guanajuato has the highest homicide rate in Mexico, largely due to violent turf wars between drug cartels.
