The U.S. Department of Commerce has fined GlobalFoundries $500,000 for shipping $17.1 million worth of chips to SJ Semiconductor, a company linked to the restricted Chinese firm SMIC, without the necessary license. The 74 unauthorized shipments took place between February 2021 and October 2022. GlobalFoundries disclosed the violation and cooperated with the investigation, leading to a lesser penalty. Concerns remain about enforcement of trade restrictions.
