Pahiatua, New Zealand, celebrates 80 years since Polish children were evacuated there during WWII.

Eighty years after the arrival of 733 Polish children and 105 caregivers in Pahiatua, New Zealand, the community is celebrating this historic event. The children, evacuated from war-torn Poland in 1944, were welcomed by locals and stayed until 1945. Commemorations from November 1-2 include a street fair, performances, and emotional tributes. Around 20 surviving "Polish children" returned, reflecting on their positive memories of the town.
