A fire on Maungarei/Mt Wellington in Auckland has underscored the need for enhanced protections for culturally and ecologically important sites. Contained by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the fire damaged about one acre, threatening native flora and fauna and hindering years of restoration efforts. Paul Majurey, Chairperson of the Tūpuna Maunga Authority, called for measures like seasonal closures to prevent future incidents and highlighted ongoing fire prevention collaboration with FENZ.
