The European Commission plans a €10 billion satellite network to boost Europe's independent connectivity.

The European Commission plans to contract leading space companies to develop a 290-satellite broadband network called IRIS², aimed at enhancing Europe's independent satellite capabilities. Valued at over €10 billion ($10.9 billion), this initiative, led by the SpaceRISE consortium (Eutelsat, Hispasat, SES), seeks to provide secure connectivity for EU military and commercial users. Funding will come from the EU, European Space Agency, and private partners, with full operational status expected by the early 2030s.
