A conservation project in Scotland has bred 20 rare medicinal leeches to support their declining populations.
A conservation initiative at Highland Wildlife Park in Scotland has successfully bred 20 rare medicinal leeches, which are facing declining populations. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and Buglife collaborated on this project, aiming to eventually release the leeches into suitable habitats. Once widespread, their numbers have decreased due to habitat loss and historical medicinal use. Medicinal leeches are now a protected species in the UK.
