A National Institutes of Health study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that adolescents with severe obesity who undergo bariatric surgery experience significant long-term health benefits. After ten years, participants maintained an average 20% weight loss and saw substantial reductions in type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and abnormal cholesterol. Despite these benefits, fewer than 1% of eligible teens receive the surgery, often due to parental opposition.
