Disadvantaged pupil university attendance rate declines in England, widening the education gap.

A new study reveals that the percentage of disadvantaged pupils in England attending university has declined for the first time, exacerbating the gap with their more privileged peers. Only 16.9% of eligible free school meal students in Reading pursued higher education by age 19, compared to 53.8% for their non-eligible counterparts in Hartlepool. The gap has reached a record 36.9 percentage points, prompting calls for enhanced support for disadvantaged students.
