Mom advocates for changes in university mental health support after son's suicide; parents also campaign for statutory duty of care for students.
Maxine Carrick is advocating for legal changes in how universities address student mental health after her son, Oskar, died by suicide at Sheffield Hallam University. Despite his consent for the university to inform his family of concerns, they did not communicate his struggles. Similarly, Natasha Abrahart, a Bristol University student, took her life after expressing suicidal feelings. Her parents, along with the Carricks, are campaigning for a statutory duty of care for students in higher education.
