Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister, Mélanie Joly, condemned the alarming rise in gang violence in Haiti, where 85% of Port-au-Prince is under gang control. This violence threatens the political transition aimed at restoring security and democratic institutions. Haiti's UN ambassador has called for international support and an upgrade of the current security mission to a peacekeeping force. Canada has contributed $86 million to assist Haiti since February.
