On October 25, Kiribati held its presidential election, with incumbent Taneti Maamau seeking a third term. Maamau, who leads the pro-China Tobwaan Kiribati Party (TKP), faces rivals Bautaake Beia and Kaotitaake Kokoria, the latter having defected from the TKP. Maamau is considered the frontrunner following a strong showing in the August parliamentary elections, where his party secured over 30 of 45 seats. Election results are expected soon.
