2016 was the last confirmed live wallaby sighting in the Te Anau Basin despite ongoing search efforts.

A recent search by Environment Southland for a wallaby sighted near the Waiau River in Te Anau Basin yielded no results, despite using trained dogs and drones. Wallabies, introduced pests in New Zealand, can inflict serious economic and environmental damage. Since 2015, there have been 20 sightings in the area, with eight reported this year. The last confirmed live sighting was in 2016, prompting ongoing biosecurity efforts to prevent their spread.
