80-year-old sunken US Army ship off British Columbia leaks oil, $4.9m operation underway to extract remaining 27,000L.
An oil salvage operation is underway for the U.S. Army transport ship Brigadier General M.G. Zalinski, which sank nearly 80 years ago off British Columbia’s coast. The 77-meter vessel has been leaking oil since late 2022, with approximately 27,000 liters remaining onboard. Canada has contracted U.S.-based Resolve Marine for $4.9 million to extract the oil using "hot tapping," in collaboration with local First Nations, with the project expected to last into early November.
