Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu pardoned 113 inmates at the Sokoto Correctional Centre to mark Nigeria's 64th Independence Anniversary. This included 67 unconditional releases, commutation of 22 death sentences to life, and reductions of life sentences to 25 years for 22 inmates. Two inmates received two-year sentence reductions. Each released inmate received ₦50,000 to aid their reintegration, part of efforts to reduce overcrowding in correctional facilities.
