83-year-old Thelma Mothershed-Wair, first African American student at Little Rock Central High School in 1957, has passed away.

Thelma Mothershed-Wair, the oldest member of the Little Rock Nine, has died at 83. She was part of the first group of African American students to integrate Little Rock Central High School in 1957. Born in Texas in 1940, she graduated from the school in 1959 and later earned a degree from Southern Illinois University. In 1999, she and her peers received the Congressional Gold Medal. Her niece confirmed the news on Facebook. Funeral arrangements are pending.
