Irish State incurs €100k weekly to maintain seized cargo ship with 2.2 tonnes of cocaine; trial set for January.
The Irish State is incurring €100,000 weekly to maintain the MV Matthew, a cargo ship seized in September 2023 with 2.2 tonnes of cocaine valued at €157 million. The vessel was formally forfeited on November 19, 2023, to ensure fair trial rights for eight accused individuals. Lawyers have access to inspect the ship, with the trial set to begin in January and expected to last four months. The State plans to seek termination of the ship's maintenance soon.
