Ilir Meta, former President of Albania and leader of the left-wing Freedom Party, has been arrested in Tirana on charges of money laundering. The National Investigation Bureau took him into custody amid ongoing investigations into alleged illegal lobbying in the U.S. Meta, who served as president from 2017 to 2022, has criticized Prime Minister Edi Rama's government as a "kleptocratic regime." His party has labeled the arrest a "criminal kidnapping."
