Mel Showers, a pioneering news anchor from Mobile, Alabama, passed away at 78 after a remarkable 50-year career at WKRG-TV. He served as the main anchor from 1980 to 2019 and was a trailblazer as one of the first African American anchors in the Gulf Coast region. Showers was inducted into the Alabama Broadcasting Hall of Fame and received the Journalist of Distinction award from the National Association of Black Journalists.
