Binary brown dwarf system Gliese 229B confirmed, previously thought to be single brown dwarf.
Researchers have confirmed that Gliese 229B, initially thought to be a single brown dwarf, is actually a binary system of two brown dwarfs orbiting each other. This revelation, based on observations from the Very Large Telescope in Chile, resolves previous questions about its dimness relative to its mass. The twins, about 18 light-years away, orbit each other every 12 days, suggesting the possibility of more hidden brown dwarf pairs in the universe.
