Mercer Pulp fined $1m for discharging toxic wastewater into Alberta's Peace River, harming fish populations.

Mercer Peace River Pulp Ltd. has been fined $1 million for discharging nearly 31 million liters of toxic wastewater into Alberta's Peace River in April 2021, causing significant harm to fish populations. The company pleaded guilty to violating the Fisheries Act and will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry. The spill occurred due to inadequate capacity in the spill pond during maintenance shutdowns. The fine will support Ottawa's Environmental Damages Fund.
