South African couple, Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim, receive Lasker Prize for HIV prevention research.

Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim, a South African husband-and-wife team, have received the Lasker Prize for their pioneering work in HIV prevention. They identified the high infection rates among young South African women during the AIDS epidemic and developed protective treatments, including a gel and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). The $250,000 prize will support further research into HIV prevention.
