Former Empress Michiko of Japan, 89, has been discharged from the University of Tokyo Hospital after successful surgery for a fractured right femur, which she sustained in a fall at her Tokyo residence on October 6. She expressed gratitude to the hospital staff and will continue her recovery at home. Michiko, mother of current Emperor Naruhito, and her husband, former Emperor Akihito, are recognized for modernizing the Japanese monarchy.
