Mik Arkesteyn, recently promoted to captain at the Williams Lake Fire Department (WLFD), highlights the supportive environment for women in her predominantly male field. Originally from Kamloops, she joined the WLFD in 2014 after pursuing architecture. With nine women in a 40-member team, Arkesteyn emphasizes the importance of mental and physical health in firefighting and appreciates the camaraderie that has facilitated her growth and success in this demanding profession.
