Dr. Niall McGonigle, Northern Ireland Director of The Royal College of Surgeons, estimates that it will take nearly £1 billion to eliminate hospital waiting lists over the next five years. Although £180 million was allocated for 2021-2022, only £45 million was spent. The Department of Health plans to allocate £135 million annually, totaling £675 million, with an additional £80 million potentially forthcoming, though its timing remains uncertain.
