Wan Yee Ng, a 41-year-old woman from Hong Kong, pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle 29 protected eastern box turtles from Vermont into Canada by kayak. Arrested on June 28, she was found with the turtles wrapped in socks inside a duffle bag. Ng intended to sell the turtles, valued at $1,000 each on the Chinese black market, for profit in Hong Kong. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine at her sentencing in December.
