2025 projected for New Zealand's net migration to reach zero, due to record citizen departures and job shortages.

New Zealand is experiencing a significant decline in net migration, with a record 81,200 citizens leaving the country in the year to August 2024. The total migrant departures reached 134,300, also a record high. This trend, driven by job shortages and a soft economy, is projected to result in zero net migration by 2025, potentially impacting the labor market, housing, and economic growth. Current net migration stands at 53,800, down from 67,200 the previous year.
