2024 CMPD report: 28% rise in homicides, 7% increase in aggravated assaults, linked to organized retail crime.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported a 28% rise in homicides and a 7% increase in aggravated assaults from January 1 to September 30, 2024, compared to 2023. This increase is linked to a spike in organized retail crime. While property crime decreased by 1%, total calls for service rose by 3%. CMPD plans to bolster its force with 48 new officers and introduce a civil crash investigation program by year-end.
