The Canadian government is investing $4.9 million to remove oil from the WWII-era shipwreck M.G. Zalinski, which sank near Pitt Island in 1946 and poses an environmental risk. The U.S. salvage company Resolve Marine will conduct the operation, starting this month, using a method called "hot tapping." The Gitga’at and Gitxaala First Nations are collaborating in the response. The removal aims to mitigate potential oil spills in the area.
