2023 Luton Airport fire could have been mitigated by sprinkler system; 1,352 vehicles destroyed, flights grounded.
A report from Bedfordshire Fire & Rescue Service indicates that a sprinkler system could have mitigated a massive fire at Luton Airport in October 2023, which destroyed 1,352 vehicles and temporarily grounded flights. The fire, ignited by an electrical fault in a red Range Rover, spread rapidly due to wind. While not mandatory, the absence of a sprinkler system hindered firefighting efforts. The airport is now constructing a new car park with plans for such systems.
