Matthew Shaw, a 27-year-old science teacher from Gloucestershire, lost £3,500 after a Romanian hacker purchased his identity on the dark web. The hacker drained Shaw's bank account to pay for a hotel and drinks while he was on holiday, forcing him and his wife to cut their trip short. His bank, First Direct, refunded the amount within a week. Shaw has since enhanced his security measures, including setting up two-factor authentication, but still receives daily alerts about unauthorized sign-ins.
