Sturgeon County farmers are recommended to plant trees around canola fields for increased hoverfly pollination and pest control.

A University of Alberta study recommends that Sturgeon County farmers plant trees around canola fields to enhance yield by attracting hoverflies, key pollinators. The research found that treed borders deliver 84,699 hoverflies per week per kilometer, 33 times more than grassy areas. Hoverflies not only improve pollination but also aid in pest control as their larvae consume aphids. Farmers are advised to maintain and establish treed borders for optimal benefits.
