In July and August 2023, Malta faced record electricity demand due to a significant heatwave, with consumption rising by 11.5% and 10.4%. An eight-day heatwave in July caused failures in Enemalta's high voltage network, attributed to a decade of underinvestment. Electricity production rose by 1.5%, with renewable energy increasing by 7.3%. In total, Malta's electricity supply reached 2,918 GWh in 2023, with 67.8% from power plants.
