5-meter totem pole near Manitoba legislature removed due to deterioration; Manitoba government will preserve it in a raised planter bed.
A 5-meter totem pole near the Manitoba legislature has been removed after 53 years due to deterioration. Unveiled in 1971 by First Nations artist Henry Hunt, it commemorated British Columbia's 100th anniversary of Confederation and depicted a West Coast Indigenous legend. The Manitoba government will lay the pole in a raised planter bed to return it to the earth, while Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the significance of honoring Indigenous cultures in reconciliation efforts.
