The FCC has granted SpaceX and T-Mobile emergency approval to use Starlink satellites for direct-to-cell coverage in hurricane-stricken North Carolina following Hurricane Helene. This initiative aims to restore wireless services, with over 74% of cell towers initially down. SpaceX has activated the satellites to send emergency alerts and is testing SMS capabilities. While the full satellite constellation is not yet deployed, efforts are underway to support recovery and aid first responders.
