NPCIL to operate 220 MW Bharat Small Reactors for private companies, using PHWR technology with lower costs, targeting energy-intensive industries.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) is set to operate 220 MW small nuclear plants, called 'Bharat Small Reactors,' for private companies that will provide funding and land. Using Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) technology, these reactors aim to lower the exclusion zone to 500 meters and target energy-intensive industries like steel. Estimated construction costs are Rs 16 crore per MW, significantly lower than foreign estimates, supporting India's cleaner energy goals.
